১.Man is a social animal . He cannot live alone . No person can be happy without having sincere friends . But selfish persons fail to make real friendship . Because to get love , you must give love in return .
Ans: মানুষ সামাজিক জীব । সে একাকী বাস করতে পারে না । প্রকৃত বন্ধু ছাড়া কেউই সুখী হতে পারে না । কিন্তু স্বার্থপর মানুষ বন্ধু পেতে পারে না । কিছু না দিলে তো কিছু পাওয়া যায় না । ভালোবাসার বিনিময়ে ভালোবাসা মেলে ।

২.We should try to prosper in life . But we should not give up our sense of morality . If we compromise with dishonesty , it would be difficult for us to respect ourselves . So it is important to choose the right way .
Ans: জীবনে সমৃদ্ধিশালী হতে আমরা সচেষ্ট হব । কিন্তু নৈতিকতার বোধকে আমরা বিসর্জন দেব না । যদি আমরা অসাধুতার সঙ্গে আপস করি , তাহলে আত্মসম্মান বজায় রাখা কঠিন হবে । সেজন্য যথার্থ পথ নির্বাচন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ।

৩.Newspaper reading has become an essential part of our life . As we get up in the morning , we wait eagerly for the daily paper . Twentieth century was an age of newspapers . Through newspapers we gather information about different countries of the world .

Ans: খবরের কাগজ পড়া আমাদের জীবনের প্রয়োজনীয় অংশ হয়ে পড়েছে । যখন আমরা সকালে উঠি , আমরা সাগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করি খবরের কাগজের জন্য । বিংশ শতাব্দী হলো খবরের কাগজের যুগ । খবরের কাগজের মাধ্যমে আমরা পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশের খবরাখবর পেয়ে থাকি ।

৪.There is nothing like a book . Nothing has been able to stop the man who writes books . Books have been burnt and writers have been tortured , but books have spread themselves through out the world so that there is no country on earth without them now . They are the only things that live forever .
Ans: বইয়ের মতো জিনিস আর নেই । বই লেখককে কোনো কিছু প্রতিনিবৃত্ত করতে পারে না । বই পোড়ানো হয়েছে , গ্রন্থকার নির্যাতিত হয়েছেন , কিন্তু বই সারা পৃথিবীতে বিস্তারলাভ করেছে এমনভাবে যে , এখন বই ছাড়া পৃথিবীতে কোনো দেশ নেই । বই – ই হলো একমাত্র চিরস্থায়ী ।

৫.There lived many mice in a house . They caused much harm . So the house – master was compelled to bring in a cat to kill them . The cat was fond of catching game . The mice were now very much afraid of the cat .
Ans: একটি বাড়িতে অনেক ইঁদুরের বাস ছিল । তারা অনেক অনিষ্টের কারণ হয়েছিল । কাজেই তাদের মারতে বাড়ির মালিক একটা বিড়াল আনতে বাধ্য হয়েছিল । বিড়ালটা শিকার ধরায় অনুরাগী ছিল । ইঁদুরগুলি এখন বিড়ালটার ভয়ে খুব ভীত ছিল ।

৬.Long , long ago there was a dog . He was the master of a large country . One day he thought , ” I have lived here for many years . I want to see other countries . ”
Ans: অনেক অনেক বছর আগে এক কুকুর ছিল । সে ছিল এক বড়োসড়ো দেশের মনিব । একদিন সে ভাবল , ‘ আমি এখানে অনেক বছর বাস করছি । আমি অন্যান্য দেশ দেখতে চাই । ‘

৭.Once a soldier was made a prisoner of war . After a few years the war ended and he was released . One day while he was walking near a market he saw a bird – seller with a cage full of birds for sale . The soldier bought the cage and then set all the birds free one by one . When the people around asked him about his strange behavior he replied , ‘ I know the agony of captivity . “
Ans: একসময় এক সৈনিক যুদ্ধে বন্দি হয়েছিলেন । কয়েক বছর পরে যুদ্ধ শেষ হওয়ায় তিনি ছাড়া পান । একদিন তিনি যখন একটা বাজারের কাছ দিয়ে হেঁটে যাচ্ছিলেন , তখন তিনি দেখলেন বিক্রির জন্য খাঁচা ভরতি পাখি সহ এক পাখি বিক্রেতাকে । সৈনিক খাঁচাটি কিনে নিলেন । তারপর খাঁচাটি খুলে পাখিগুলিকে একের পর এক ছেড়ে দিলেন । তার চারপাশের লোকজন যখন তার এই অদ্ভুত আচরণের ব্যাপারে জানতে চাইল তিনি উত্তর দিলেন , ‘ আমি বন্দিদশার যন্ত্রণা জানি ।

৮.One day Sir Isaac Newton went out of his room leaving on the table a heap of papers containing his long research on the theory of light . There was on the floor of the room lying his pet dog , Diamond . No sooner had he gone than the dog jumped upon the table and upturned the lighted candle and the papers immediately caught fire .
Ans: স্যার আইজ্যাক নিউটন আলোর তত্ত্বের ওপর দীর্ঘ গবেষণার একগাদা কাগজ টেবিলের ওপর রেখে একদিন ঘরের বাইরে যান । ঘরের মেঝেতে তার পোষা কুকুর ডায়মন্ড শুয়েছিল । তিনি ঘর থেকে বেরোতে না বেরোতে কুকুরটি টেবিলের ওপর লাফ মারে এবং জ্বলতে থাকা বাতিটি উলটে যাওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে কাগজে আগুন ধরে যায় ।

৯.Jagadish Chandra Bose showed that there is no difference between the life of plants and animals . If we give the plants a blow it feel it , if we make them drink poison , they are affected by it like us . Like human beings they also sleep at night and wake up in the morning . They even die like men .
Ans: জগদীশচন্দ্র বসু দেখিয়েছিলেন যে উদ্ভিদ ও প্রাণীর জীবনের মধ্যে কোনো তফাত নেই । যদি আমরা গাছকে আঘাত করি তা হলে গাছটি তা অনুভব করে এবং যদি গাছকে বিষ পান করাই তা হলে আমাদের মতোই সে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয় । মানুষের মতো তারাও রাত্রে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ে এবং সকালে জেগে উঠে । এমনকী মানুষের মতো তারা মারাও যায় ।

১০.Once two friend started on a travel . Their way lay through a forest . As they come half way through the forest , a bear was seen approaching slowly towards them . One of them climbed up a tree . The other did not know how to climb up a tree and lay flat on his face without breathing .
Ans: দুই বন্ধুতে একদিন বেড়াতে বেরোয় । তাদের বেড়ানোর রাস্তা বনের মধ্যে দিয়ে গেছে । বনের মধ্যে তারা অর্ধেক পথ পার হয়েছে , এমন সময় একটা ভালুককে তাদের দিকে ধীরে ধীরে আসতে দেখা যায় । তাদের মধ্যে একজন একটা গাছে চড়ে পড়ে । গাছে কীভাবে চড়তে হয় অপরজন জানে না , কাজেই নিশ্বাস বন্ধ করে সে উপুড় হয়ে শুয়ে পড়ে ।
